Cape Canaveral: The upper stage of a SpaceX rocket—which had carried two spacecraft from Earth and placed them into lunar orbit—went off course and crashed directly into the lunar surface at a speed of 8,700 kilometers per hour. This Falcon 9 rocket upper stage weighed approximately 4,500 kilograms, measured 39 feet in length, and was comparable in size to a five-story building. The rocket had been launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in January of last year.
