Trump calls PM Modi on Diwali, wishes him well
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked US President Donald Trump for his Diwali greetings. Trump had wished PM Modi a happy Diwali via phone call. PM Modi wrote on his social media handle, "President Trump, thank you for your phone call and warm Diwali wishes. On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to be a beacon of hope to the world and remain united against terrorism in all its forms."
This phone conversation between Narendra Modi and Donald Trump comes at a time when US-India relations are strained over trade tariffs and other issues. The US continues to pressure India not to buy oil from Russia.

Donald Trump celebrated Diwali at the White House. He extended Diwali greetings on this occasion. US President Donald Trump said, "I extend my heartfelt greetings to the people of India. I spoke with your Prime Minister today. We had a very good conversation. We talked about trade...he's very interested in it. However, a while ago, we discussed the need to avoid war with Pakistan. Talking about trade allowed me to discuss this. He's a great man and has become a very good friend of mine over the years."
Trump claimed to have spoken with PM Modi last week.
It's worth noting that the US President claimed to have spoken with Prime Minister Modi a week ago. Trump had said that PM Modi had assured him that New Delhi would stop buying oil from Russia. He described this as a major step in efforts to isolate Moscow over the Ukraine war. However, India dismissed this statement, clarifying that no such conversation had taken place. India's Foreign Ministry had stated that "there was no phone call between the two leaders."
