Backward class organization on streets against ban on 42% reservation
Backward class organizations in Telangana have called for a statewide bandh on Saturday demanding 42 percent reservation for the backward class community in the state. The bandh is supported by many political parties and organizations including Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Left parties.
Why was the call made for the bandh?
The bandh has been called in protest against the Telangana High Court's stay on the state government's order to grant 42 percent reservation to backward castes in local bodies. Later, the state government went to the Supreme Court against the High Court's order, but there was also a setback.
In the proposed order, the total reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and other castes has been given up to 67 percent. During the hearing, the Telangana government said that all political parties supported the proposed order and passed a unanimous resolution in its favour, but the Supreme Court reminded it of the 50 percent limit for reservation.
Know what will be open and what will be closed?
All schools, colleges and government offices in the state will remain closed due to the bandh. Apart from this, public transport is also likely to be affected by the closure. All essential services will continue.
Along with the BJP, the Congress has also supported the bandh
The BJP has also supported the bandh, with party MP R Krishnaiah saying the dharna represents the collective voice of all backward classes in the state. He said, "We will protest on a large scale for justice and call for a bandh to pressurize the government to provide reservation in both employment and local bodies. Notably, the ruling Congress in Telangana has also supported the bandh and criticized the BJP. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramark has alleged that the Modi government at the Center is not approving the backward class quota increase bill.
