Sankranthi means the transition of the sun from one zodiac sign to another. It is said to have originated from the word ‘Shankara’, which means movement. This implies that movement exists only where there is life, and that creation continues because of the movement of the planets. In Sanskrit, ‘Sam’ means good, and ‘Kranthi’ means change. Although the sun changes zodiac signs every month, we celebrate ‘Makara Sankranthi’, the transition from Sagittarius to Capricorn, as a major festival. This change is a symbol of progress.
