The Karnataka government has installed solar panels at Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha. This is intended to encourage the use of solar energy and become a model for implementation in other government buildings. This project has been implemented in partnership with SELCO Foundation, and is expected to save Rs 20 lakh per year on electricity bills. Bengaluru, February 07: With the aim of promoting the use of solar energy in the state, the state government has launched the installation of solar panels at Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha premises. The government has undertaken this work with the aim of encouraging the installation of solar energy in other government buildings in the state, especially in panchayat offices, and this is expected to save lakhs of rupees per year on the electricity bill of Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha. About 12 percent of the electricity supply to the building is from solar panels! This project is being implemented by the SELCO Foundation, which operates in the field of sustainable energy under a public-private partnership. Due to lack of space in the Vidhana Soudha, which has historical significance and to avoid compromising the nature of the heritage building, solar panels have not been installed on the roof. Instead, solar panels are being installed in various parts of the premises, including the parking area outside the main building. Currently, panels are being installed at various places in the Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha premises, which will generate about 300 kilowatts of electricity. This is only about 12 percent of the total electricity demand required for these buildings, and despite the large area of the building, it has not been possible to install solar panels completely, officials said. Will this project save Rs. 20 lakh per year? Officials said that the solar panels being installed in the Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha will result in significant financial savings for the government. There are more than a thousand rooms in these two magnificent buildings, and the electricity bill is coming in at Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh every month. Now, by installing 300 kilowatt solar panels, it is expected to save about Rs. 20 lakh per year. Officials have informed that the project will yield a return on investment within two years.
