On the eighth day of the Sharannavaratri festival, the presiding deity at the Sri Kanaka Durgamma Temple in Vijayawada is adorned as Sri Durga Devi. According to the Puranas, it was on this day—the *Ashtami* (eighth lunar day)—that the Goddess vanquished the demon Durgama. Hence, this day is known as 'Durgashtami.' Devotees hold a firm belief that seeking the blessings of the Goddess on this day—who is hailed as 'Durge Durgatinashini' (the destroyer of all miseries and misfortunes)—can liberate them from their hardships. Among the five grand manifestations of *Prakriti* (Nature/Cosmic Energy), the form of Durga is the first.
