Chief Justice Gavai said: Bulldozer justice is unacceptable in a civilized society.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai recently said that he and Justice K.V. Vishwanathan found immense satisfaction in passing the order against bulldozer justice. Speaking at the 269th Friday Group, an academic group of Supreme Court advocates, Chief Justice Gavai said that he had the opportunity to share the bench with Justice Vishwanathan for nearly six months. Bulldozer Justice Unacceptable in a Civilized Society
During this period, the bench passed several directives against the executive's tendency to arbitrarily demolish the properties of accused/convicts. Holding those responsible for such actions accountable, the bench stated that bulldozer justice is unacceptable in a civilized society governed by the rule of law.
CJI B.R. Gavai explained why he gave such a decision
Recalling the decision, the CJI said, "I think the bulldozer decision was extremely satisfying for both of us. At the core of this decision was human problems and the problems faced by humans." A family that was being harassed simply because it was part of a family whose members were either a criminal or an alleged criminal."
Chief Justice Gavai stated that Justice Vishwanathan deserves equal credit for this judgment. "While most of the credit has been given to me, I would also like to say that Justice Vishwanathan deserves equal credit for authoring this judgment," the Chief Justice said. Furthermore, Chief Justice Gavai stated that the tenure of the Chief Justice of India has no impact on the administration of justice, as many Chief Justices have held the position for barely a few months. Chief Justice Gavai stated that he has done everything possible to improve the delivery of justice and improve the judicial infrastructure across the country.
