PM Modi congratulated the Indian women's team on becoming world champions for the first time. He wrote that this victory will inspire future champions. India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the Women's ODI World Cup final to win the ICC trophy for the first time in women's cricket. Deepti Sharma took the highest five wickets for India and also scored 58 runs with the bat. Your excellent cricketing skills have paved the way for inspiration for millions of girls. Congratulations to the entire team." Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote, "Historic victory... Heartiest congratulations to the world champion Indian women's cricket team! Heartfelt congratulations to the countrymen! You are all the pride of the nation. Bharat Mata ki Jai." What happened in the match? The final match started late due to rain. South Africa won the toss and invited India to bat. Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma provided a solid start with a 104-run partnership for the first wicket in 17.4 overs. Jemimah and Harmanpreet also made useful contributions. Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh batted well in the end, taking the Indian team to 298 runs. Shefali Verma top-scored with 87 runs and Deepti Sharma with 58 runs. Defending the target, Deepti Sharma took five wickets for India. Shefali Verma also took two wickets. India scored 298 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs. In reply, South Africa were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs, losing the match by 52 runs. Captain Laura Wolpert scored a century for South Africa, but could not lead the team to victory.
