Kanchi: The secret behind the golden and silver lizards
There is a mythological story behind the golden and silver lizards in the Varadaraja Perumal Temple in Kanchi. Disciples of Sage Gautama, cursed to become lizards, prayed to the deity here and attained salvation. It is believed that touching these lizards, which symbolize the sun and moon, removes sins and the ill effects caused by a lizard falling on someone. Interestingly, rare golden-colored lizards called Golden Geckos are still found in the Seshachalam forests. It is believed that touching them washes away sins.
