Why does the wife sit to the left of her husband?
In Hindu tradition, it is said that the wife should sit to the left of her husband. The main reason for this is the Ardhanarishvara concept of Shiva and Parvati. According to the Puranas, Goddess Parvati resides in the left half of Lord Shiva's body. Also, since the heart is on the left side, the underlying meaning is that the wife should be close to her husband's heart. That is why, during prayers and auspicious ceremonies, the wife sits to the left of her husband and performs her duties as a partner.
