Maharashtra Urban Local Body Elections: BJP-led Mahayuti enjoys a landslide victory
Mumbai, December 21: The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has won a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Urban Local Body Elections. The BJP and its allies are leading in most of the seats in the Maharashtra Urban Local Bodies Elections. The Mahayuti alliance is leading in 214 local bodies. The opposition alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), is leading in only 52 local bodies.
Voting was held in two phases on December 2 and 20 for 6,859 seats in various urban bodies. The counting of votes is underway today and the BJP-led alliance has maintained a strong lead since the beginning. Out of the 6,859 seats, the BJP is leading in 3,120 seats alone. Its allies Shiv Sena and NCP are leading in 600 and 200 seats respectively. The alliance has won more than half the seats.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties Shiv Sena (Udbhav Thackeray faction), Congress and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) have managed to maintain their lead in 145, 105 and 122 seats respectively.
These local body elections are a testament to the fact that the alliance government, which had won a landslide victory in the 2024 assembly elections, has maintained its popularity.
However, there was a feeling that the crisis in the agricultural sector in the state of Maharashtra, and the allegations that the government was not releasing the subsidy money properly for the welfare schemes of women and farmers, may have reduced the popularity of the government. The opposition parties had campaigned on this issue. Thus, the Maha Vikas Aghadi was expecting a supplementary victory in the local body elections. However, this expectation was not fulfilled. The trend of the results is that the voters have once again supported Mayayuti.
