Tobacco Procurement in Disarray
Amaravati: Tobacco procurement operations in the state have fallen into disarray. While some companies are refusing to purchase the tobacco brought by farmers to the auction centers, others are failing to offer remunerative prices—unlike in the past. The market is currently facing volatility due to increased production, a hike in GST on cigarette products, and the impact of the ongoing war. Although sales are taking place on an alternate-day basis at some auction centers, the Tobacco Board is allowing only a limited number of tobacco bales brought by farmers to be processed. Furthermore, some companies are attempting to purchase the produce at significantly lower prices.
