Which oil should be used for lighting lamps?
It is believed that the blessings of different deities are obtained depending on the oil used for lighting lamps. Cow ghee is most dear to Goddess Mahalakshmi. This increases wealth and sattvic qualities. Sesame oil is dear to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shani, and Lord Subrahmanya. Coconut oil is preferred by Lord Ganesha. Castor oil/neem oil is used for goddesses. Groundnut oil should never be used for lighting lamps. A lamp should be lit with cow ghee at the Tulasi plant.
