Siddaramaiah government accused of protecting sand mafia
Bengaluru: The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka is facing turbulence as allegations surface that the sand mafia has been allowed to operate freely. The claims come from none other than Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s advisor, Basavaraj Rayareddy, who has written a letter to the CM accusing departmental officials of colluding with sand smugglers. Rayareddy alleged that corrupt officers are aiding the mafia in looting over ₹400 crore in royalty revenue. He urged strict action, saying the nexus between officials and sand mafia is draining the state’s natural resources. Suggesting a transparent system, he proposed that homeowners pay sand royalties directly to the government, removing middlemen. Rayareddy’s letter also highlights large-scale illegal quarrying from areas about 85 km from the Tungabhadra river, involving over 200 people and 100–150 trucks daily. He named senior geologist Pushpalata among the alleged culprits and demanded a task force led by the Deputy Commissioner to stop the racket and restore departmental integrity.
