Cracking Down on Religious Conversions: Maharashtra Assembly Approves Key Bill
The Maharashtra Assembly has passed the 'Freedom of Religion Bill-2026,' which prohibits religious conversions carried out through coercion, fraud, inducement, or marriage. Under this legislation, offenders face a prison sentence of up to seven years along with a fine of ₹1 lakh. An additional fine of ₹5 lakh will be imposed for conversions involving minors, members of Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST), women, or sick individuals, as well as for mass conversions. Recidivists—those who repeatedly commit these offenses—will be subject to a prison term of ten years and a fine of ₹5 lakh.
