'Modi Tax' on UPI
The Congress party has termed the MDR charges on commercial UPI transactions a "Modi tax." It questioned whether the government was unaware that merchants would pass the burden of MDR charges on to consumers. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Modi imposed charges on UPI transactions by yielding to pressure from the US. "The government claims that commercial transactions exceeding ₹2,000 account for only 5% of the total and that MDR applies only to them," the party noted.
