NCRB Report 2023: Murders decline, cyber crimes rise 31%
New Delhi: According to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India witnessed significant changes in crime trends in 2023. While murder cases declined, crimes against Scheduled Tribes and cybercrimes increased.
The report stated that cybercrimes increased by 31.2 percent. 86,420 cases of cybercrime were registered in 2023, compared to 65,893 in 2022.
Murder Cases Declined to 27,721 in 2023
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which maintains national records of crimes and trends, revealed that 28,522 murder cases were registered in India in 2022, which declined to 27,721 in 2023, a decline of 2.8 percent.
The report stated, "The highest number of murder cases during 2023 were attributed to 'dispute' (9,209 cases). This was followed by 'personal vendetta or enmity' (3,458 cases) and 'profit' (1,890 cases)."
Crimes against Scheduled Tribes
Crimes against Scheduled Tribes saw a 28.8 percent increase, from 10,064 cases in 2022 to 12,960 cases in 2023. The overall crime rate in this category also increased from 9.6 in 2022 to 12.4 in 2023.
According to the NCRB, crime rates are cases of crime per lakh population as per the 2011 census data. "Crime rates for metropolitan cities have been calculated based on the actual census of 2011. Cases related to simple injury constitute 21.3 percent of the total cases," the report stated.
1,189 cases of rape
This is followed by 1,707 cases of rioting, which constitute 13.2 percent of the total FIRs, and 1,189 cases of rape, which constitute 9.2 percent of the total.
The report states that the rate of cybercrime increased from 4.8 percent to 6.2 percent.
According to the report, crimes against women saw a marginal increase of 0.4 percent, from 4.45 lakh cases in 2022 to 4,48,211 cases in 2023.
