The Exodus of Toppers: Educated Here, Living Abroad!
The 'brain drain' phenomenon in the country is becoming a cause for concern. Between 1990 and 2020, 74%—or 23 out of 31—of the top-ranking JEE candidates (toppers) have migrated abroad. Another five individuals remain in India but are currently working for foreign-based companies. It is not just these individuals; every year, hundreds of thousands of students are heading abroad. In 2021–22, while 46,878 students came to India for their studies, a staggering 1.159 million Indian students went overseas. By 2024, this figure had risen to 1.336 million. Upon completing their studies, many are choosing to settle down in those countries.
