Are you familiar with the term ‘Ampashayya’ (Bed of Arrows)?
When a person or a specific field of activity finds itself in extremely dire circumstances—at its very last stage—we often describe it as being on an ‘Ampashayya.’ This idiom originates from the *Mahabharata*. Bhishma was a legendary warrior. During the Kurukshetra War, upon encountering Shikhandi, he laid down his arms; immediately thereafter, Arjuna unleashed a torrent of arrows upon him. As a result, Bhishmacharya lay upon a bed formed entirely of arrows—his body never touching the ground—for 58 days, finally casting off his mortal coil during the auspicious period of *Uttarayan*.
